In 1914, despite growing Austro-Serbian tensions, war was far from certain. What determined the nature of the events following the assassination were the political interpretations and goals of key players: Serbia, Austria-Hungary, Russia and Germany. Britain, France and Belgium were soon to follow, but their roles emerged only after Eastern Europe had turned down the path to war. |
